CONGRATULATIONS TO DR CAMILO MENDEZ AND DR EUGENE BIRMAN ON RECEIVING THE PRESIDENT・S AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE 2021

28 May 2021

We are excited to announce that our faculty members received three President’s Award for Outstanding Performance 2021. Congratulations to Dr Camilo Mendez and Dr Eugene Birman! Dr Mendez is awarded the President’s Award for Outstanding Performance in Early Career Teaching and Dr Birman pockets Performance Award as Young Researcher and Knowledge Transfer Award.

Dr Mendez・s devotion to his students was well demonstrated by his thoughtful preparation of learning materials and his multidisciplinary approach in courses including AV-assessment methods, and his efforts to organize sharing sessions and off-campus visits to exhibitions and experimental music concerts. All his tireless efforts, creativity and care for his students is recognised by the Selection Committee.

Dr Birman・s research focus has been to combine social and political topics. His award project, Space to Breathe, unites art and science to dramatize and bring the genuine affliction of air pollution to the forefront of the cultural sphere, which is the first of its kind in the Hong Kong cultural landscape. This project collaborated with international producers and artists which exposes HKBU・s research excellence to institutions and foreign media.

The President・s Award Scheme for Outstanding Performance of Academic/Teaching Staff was established in 2000-01 to recognise outstanding performance, to promote excellence in performance standards and to encourage colleagues to press on for greater achievement. Under the Scheme, the President will give out at most two President・s Awards for Outstanding Performance in each award category in the three areas of teaching, scholarly work, and service.

This year, the University received a total of thirty-one nominations from respective Faculties/Schools for the Award Scheme. All colleagues have performed excellent work in their respective areas. After thorough and extensive deliberation, the Selection Committee finally recommended ten colleagues to receive the President・s Award for their outstanding accomplishments.
