Congratulations to Dr John Winzenburg on receiving the President¡¦s Award for Outstanding Performance in Teaching 2019

30 April 2019

Heartfelt congratulations to Dr John Winzenburg, Associate Professor in the Department of Music, for receiving the HKBU President¡¦s Award for Outstanding Performance in Teaching 2019. His enthusiastic yet inspiring pedagogies made him one of the two awardees this year.

Renowned for his innovative approach to choral music, Dr Winzenburg puts theoretical research, practical performance, and community impact into students’ learning. As one successful example, the Cantoría Hong Kong, which he conducts, collaborated with other HKBU choirs and the Hong Kong Children’s Choir in presenting the recent choral concert Colla Voce 2019³ß¸f! - their first all-Cantonese programme of newly commissioned works by Hong Kong composers. “We are especially proud of our ongoing Chinese choral music project, transforming cultural practices and making various Chinese-language works accessible to choirs around Hong Kong and across different regions,” Dr Winzenburg said.

The President¡¦s Award Scheme for Outstanding Performance of Academic/Teaching Staff was established in 2000-01 to recognise outstanding performance, to promote excellence in performance standards and to encourage colleagues to press on for greater achievement. Under the Scheme, the President will give out at most two President¡¦s Awards for Outstanding Performance in each award category in the three areas of teaching, scholarly work, and service.

This year, the University received a total of forty nominations from respective Faculties/Schools for the Award Scheme. All colleagues have performed excellent work in their respective areas. After thorough and extensive deliberation, the Selection Committee finally recommended ten colleagues and two teams to receive the President¡¦s Award for their outstanding accomplishments. ¡§I am heartened by the recognition this award extends to the achievements earned by HKBU student choral ensembles through our innovative partnerships with world-class artists and organizations,¡¨ Dr Winzenburg said.
