20 July 2017

Congratulations to our student Tony Chan on his winning of the Champion Prize in the New Generation 2017, with his piece ¡§Fearing the Shadow¡¨. ¡§Fearing the Shadow¡¨ (¡mªM¤}³D¼v¡n), Tony explained, is an Chinese idiom which means mistaking the shadow of a bow in one's cup as a snake. In other words, it is a false alarm that makes a person being extremely frightened. This ¡§irrational fear¡¦ is usually a result of being overly sensitive. The piece described his unexplained anxiety, depression, anger, irritability and mental confusion in this year.

¡§I would like to thank Dr. Christopher Coleman for helping me a lot by giving me advice. I would also like to express my sincerest gratitude to the Hong Kong Composer¡¦s Guild for encouraging music creatively among young composers in Hong Kong by organizing the competition.¡¨ says Tony.

Tony will graduate from Hong Kong Baptist University in November 2017 with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Music degree. Majoring in Composition, Tony is also one of our violinists in the University Symphony Orchestra. He will be pursuing Master of Music in The Hong Kong Academy of Performing Arts in the fall.
