Tapiola Sinfonietta Quartet Premiered New Work by Jeff Leung (BA Alumnus 2013)

10 December 2013

¡§66 Leighton Road¡¨ by Jeff Leung, class of 2013, was premiered at MUSICUS FEST last month.

The world premiere took place at the headquarters of Po Leung Kuk at 66 Leighton Road, Causeway Bay, which serves as the inspiration for the piece. The piece is based mainly on the conditions in Hong Kong during the 19th century, where women and children were illegally trafficked and abused. Thus, Po Leung Kuk was established with the goal of protecting and educating these victims, which are represented as two constant elements throughout the work. In the end, these elements help to highlight the contrast between the darkness of society¡¦s ills and the charity of Po Leung Kuk.

Tapiola Sinfonietta Quartet from Finland also performed the piece in the finale concert of the season long festival, ¡§Musicus Fest Encore¡¨, which took place at the Hong Kong City Hall Concert Hall earlier this month.

Jeff graduated from HKBU, majoring in Music Composition under Dr. Christopher Coleman. He has composed a wide variety of music including traditional orchestral works, contemporary works and pop music. He was the music director and composer of several local musicals such as ¡§Footloose¡¨, and his film scoring work ¡§Last Thing I Remember¡¨ participated in the 2012 Cannes Short Film Corner. Jeff is currently studying orchestral conducting with Francis Kan, the conductor of Macao Orchestra. He also studies conducting in HKBU with Dr. John Winzenburg. He is the assistant conductor and guest viola principal of the Union Philharmonic Orchestra at the University of Hong Kong.
